Ataxia refers to a group of degenerative disorders that causes poor muscle control and can affect your balance, speech and coordination. It may occur due to brain damage in the cerebellum, the part of the brain responsible for muscle coordination.

Types

A stroke, or an injury to the brain, and an underlying condition, such as multiple sclerosis, can cause damage to the cerebellum. We call this acquired ataxia. It can also be hereditary.
Diagnosis

To diagnose ataxia, we may perform a physical and neurological exam. We may also recommend blood or urine tests, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), a spinal tap (lumbar puncture), and genetic testing to look for an inherited faulty gene.
Treatment

How we treat this condition will depend on the cause. Treatments include medication, physiotherapy, speech and language therapy, and occupational therapy.
