Spinal Cord Stimulation
A spinal cord stimulator (SCS) directs electrical impulses via an electrode to your spinal cord. We use it to treat chronic, severe pain, such as back, leg, or arm pain, and reduce your reliance on opioids.
The SCS device gets the brain to process your pain differently. How much relief you feel will depend on the system you use and other factors. You will undergo a series of tests to ensure your suitability before the procedure. You may also need psychological screening to check that depression, generalized anxiety disorder, or another condition is not worsening your pain.
The three main types of SCS devices include:
- Conventional implantable pulse generator (IPG)
- Rechargeable implantable pulse generator
- Radiofrequency stimulator
You will be taught how to use the device, and you will be able to test the level of electricity that helps you the most. You may also try tailored exercises, relaxation techniques, and medication alongside this treatment.
