Myasthenia gravis is a rare autoimmune disorder that causes communication issues between your nerves and muscles. It affects your voluntary muscles that control your facial expressions, eyes, eyelids, mouth, throat, and limbs.

Symptoms

This condition causes muscle weakness and fatigue, commonly in the upper arms and legs.

You may also experience:

Droopy eyelids
Double vision (diplopia)
Difficulty swallowing or chewing
Slurred speech

Some people have problems breathing, which can be life-threatening (myasthenic crisis).

Diagnosis

To help diagnose your condition, we will perform a neurological exam to check your reflexes, muscle strength and tone, coordination and balance. You may also need a series of tests, including blood analysis, nerve conduction studies, single-fibre electromyography (EMG), and imaging scans, such as an MRI or CT.
Treatment

Treatments include medication to improve communication between the nerves and muscles, surgery to remove the thymus gland, immunoglobin, and plasmapheresis to replace abnormal antibodies.
