Treatment for Meningitis and Encephalitis
Meningitis and Encephalitis
Meningitis and encephalitis are inflammatory diseases. Meningitis causes inflammation in the membranes around your brain (meninges) and spinal cord. Encephalitis causes inflammation of the brain. A virus or bacterial infection can cause either. If both the meninges and brain are inflamed, we call this meningoencephalitis.
Symptoms of meningitis and encephalitis include:
- Aching joints
- A rash or spots
- Feeling irritable
- Severe headache
- Stiff neck and head
- Nausea and vomiting
- Weakness or tiredness
Your symptoms may start mild or severe, though meningitis is more likely to worsen quickly. Seek medical attention if you experience the above symptoms.
