Motor neurone disease (MND) is a rare, progressive neurological condition that causes damage to your nervous system, affecting your brain and motor neurones (also known as neurons). Your motor neurones are responsible for controlling your movements. They help you speak, swallow, breathe and move. As the condition progresses, your muscles weaken and stop working.
Symptoms
Symptoms of MND include:
- A weak grip
- Shortness of breath
- Slurred speech (dysarthria)
- Weight loss or muscle wasting
- Muscle spasms, cramps and twitches
- Weakness in your shoulder, ankle or leg
- Uncontrollable crying or laughing (emotional lability)
